Review:
Cast: Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, R Madhavan, Kareena Kapoor
Director: Rajkumar Hirani
Rating: 4star

By now, Aamir Khan has hit so many sixers in his career that we can only wonder what this maestro of marketing intends to do next. For sure, “3 Idiots” is yet another vehicle to showcase Aamir’s sparkling ability to be part of a cinema that creates a colloquial yet classy language of thought provoking punctuation, syntax and exclamation.

“3 Idiots” is first and foremost a tremendously entertaining piece of cinema. The boys-will-have-fun atmosphere on an engineering campus is shot with the devious humour and warmth of a joke that has not lost its punch even after years of re-telling.

Some things never change in a straightjacketed society like ours. And really, when Rajkumar Hirani, with help from his co-writer Abhijat Joshi, sets down to criticise the glaring anomalies in our education system, we are compelled to wonder for a few seconds, if flogging the sacred cows of our institutionalised system of governance in cinema is not just an excuse to pull out all stops and let the young heroes have all the fun that their more disciplined counterparts deny themselves.

The thought processes underlining the film’s super-vibrant but calm surface are never allowed to seep out and bubble to the exterior of the narrative. If at heart “3 Idiots” is a serious indictment of our education system, at the surface it’s a character-driven film played out at an observant and opulent but always-feisty octave.

The sounds of protest against the curbs, checks and downers in our education reach out to us in a cascade of crisply-written lines spoken by characters who have lived out the nightmare that precedes that long journey into the realisation of our dreams.

At times, the narrative is savagely funny. Note the sequence where Rancho (Aamir Khan) and his girl take the critically ill old man to the hospital on a scooter. Hirani has always seen humour of mortality. He has a potent style of storytelling, a mix of street wisdom and cinematic sensitivities that come together in a noiseless tango of social comment and entertainment.

The director is strangely shy of displaying emotions. So he counters the melodrama of his third hero Raju Rastongi (Sharma Joshi)’s life with black-and-white 1960s’ self-mocking background music.

Ironically, Hirani’s unconventional hero Rancho often goes the other way and sheds manly tears for colleagues, friends and tormented young citizens of modern India who are crippled by a despotic disregard for their natural creativity.

Aamir undertakes his character’s journey through the paradoxical labyrinth of an ambition-driven education system — incidentally the loopholes in our education was also the theme of Aamir’s “Taare Zameen Par” and Hirani’s “Munnabhai M.B.B.S.” — with a gut-level understanding of what pains today’s average 20-something.

Aamir’s transformation into a 22-year-old collegian is so complete you end up wondering if he has been lying about being 40-plus in real life! Like most Aamir starrers, “3 Idiots” too is predominantly his vehicle. Most of the funniest lines and inspiring situations in the script come from Aamir. And boy, does he play the boy-man with restrained relish!

Sharman as the poor middle-class boy driven to near-suicide by his parents’ ambitions gets two meaty sequences. He chews on them with careful sensitivity, leaving a lasting impression. Madhavan as the third ‘idiot’ expresses his smothered dreams through a series of half-expressed thoughts and a fear of unhappiness that reach his eyes without transit.

Kareena as the girl engaged to the tycoon with a penchant for putting a price tag on all his gifts, brings a dollop of sunshine and feminine grace to an otherwise masculine tale. She is so spunky and spontaneous you wish there was room for more of her. There’s even less of Mona Singh who’s again a spirited free soul.

The two ladies are, fortunately, part of the climax where our three heroes deliver Kareena’s sister (Mona Singh)’s baby on the office table – a clear indication that even an all-boys tale has no qualms about embracing maternal responsibilities if the situation arises.

But did “3 Idiots” really need a manufactured child-delivered-in-crisis climax? Did it need those endless toilet-and-bum jokes? Couldn’t Boman Irani and the new actor Omi Vaidya have been delineated less hammily?

It’s not that “3 Idiots” is a flawless work of art. But it is a vital, inspiring and life-revising work of contemporary art with some heart imbued into every part.

In a country where students are driven to suicide by their impossible curriculum, “3 Idiots” provides hope. Maybe cinema can’t save lives. But cinema sure can make you feel life is worth living. “3 Idiots” does just that, and much more.

Review:
Film: “Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year”
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Manish Chaudhary, Shazahn Padamsee, Gauhar Khan, Mukesh Bhatt, Prem Chopra
Director: Shimit Amin

If cinema to you is just a vehicle to indulge in mindless diversion, then “Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year” is not your cup of tea.

If cinema as a popular work of art is meant to make viewers reconsider the quality of their lives, then plunge into the mundane world of Punjabi munda Harpreet Singh.

Like in “Wake Up Sid”, Ranbir Kapoor plays a somewhat aimless guy who’s just out of college wondering what to do next. That’s the moment when we jump into the lives of Sid and Harpreet, so similar in their soporific world-view and yet so different in their journey from premature jadedness to premature wisdom.

Shimit Amin’s earlier inspirational work “Chak De! India” was far more aggressive in its aspirations. “Rocket Singh” is a more gentle and non-cynical work. Its opinion on contemporary corruption is tinged with warmth, humour and a subtle regard for office politics seldom seen in our films.

Some may perceive “Rocket Singh” as a niche film on the politics of computer hardware. This is as shallow a reading of Shimit’s cinema as looking at “Chak De!” as a hockey film.

People habituated to being spoon-fed emotions by filmmakers who think masala is what makes entertainment palatable, may find Shimit’s approach to Harpreet’s tale almost arrogant in its self regard and disdain for the qualities that make socially-purposeful cinema engaging to the man in the backseat.

Outwardly Shimit and his brilliant writer Jaideep Sahni, whose words move effortlessly from stinging social comment to conversational candour, don’t seem to care whether the audience joins them in their scathing often frustrating sometimes humorous search for a centre to Rocket Singh’s life.

But make no mistake. This film really cares about the environment of indolent debauchery that has crept into the working-class lifestyle. The office details are so dead-on in recreating the deceptive dynamism of an office-going entourage, you wonder if Ranbir, the writer and director spent quality time in a slothful hierarchy-motivated office.

Ranbir’s journey from professional disgrace to redemption echoes Shah Rukh Khan’s voyage from the damned to the extolled in “Chak De”. Except that Ranbir’s playing field is more in his mind and soul.

As the protagonist gathers together his dignity to pursue a path of honesty in his business transactions, we witness the portrait of a detoxicated working-class hero.

Ranbir brings to his part a lot of earnestness and heart. His natural and utterly contagious exuberance seen in “Wake Up Sid” and “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani” is effortlessly curbed here. What we see on screen is a Sardar not quite like any of our movies have shown so far.

Harpreet, who later becomes Rocket Singh because his colleagues throw paper rockets at him, doesn’t become a larger-than-life figure of aggressive sales-pitch. Ranbir plays the loser who turns the zero on his life’s calling-card to his own advantage with the kind of unspoken wisdom that actors acquire after decades of experience.

The supporting cast of Mukesh Bhatt as the office peon, P. Santoshi as the lazy porn-addicted colleague, Gauhar Khan as the commodified office receptionist and Naveen Kaushik as the crucial link in Harpreet’s work place, boost Ranbir’s central presence with their ingrained sense of belonging to the world Shimit and Sahni have created.

“Rocket Singh” works on many levels beyond Ranbir’s astonishing performance. It is a momentous piece of cinema for its writing and its indifference to the dynamics of conventional storytelling.

Sahni’s words are often so laconic that they make their point without our being conscious of their importance to the given context of working-class inertia.

While urging the sexy office receptionist to join him in his audacious entrepreneurship, Harpreet warns Gauhar: “Otherwise I’ll remain the joker Sardarji and you the item girl.”

The film’s main conflict is between Harpreet and his unscrupulous boss played by the aptly over-the-top Manish Choudhary. The two finest sequences are written as muted acidic confrontations between Ranbir and Choudhary. The final encounter in a supermarket where the boss surrenders to Harpreet’s integrity is the trickiest part of the narration.

“Rocket Singh” stands tall despite its flaws. On the surface it has a uni-focussed sameness to its narration, as though the story was being told in one breath.

The lack of drama in a situation simmering with emotional dips and curves gets the audience fidgety. But soon we realise the absence of expendable energy is the narrative’s primary virtue.

You can’t miss the writer and director’s concern for a growing middle-class that worships wealth and success at the cost of more valuable assets. Most of all you can’t miss Ranbir as the understated Sardar riding his cherry-red scooter gifted by his grandfather (Prem Chopra) cringing at the red light when a swanky motorbike rides up alongside.

But Ranbir’s portrayal of the loser’s rise from shame to name is a journey we’d any day undertake even on a cherry-red scooter.

Review:
“Avatar”; Cast: Sam Worthington, Zo Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver; Director: James Cameron; Rating: ****
”Avatar” is a film that leaves you ‘nishabd’ (speechless).

James Cameron may have placed this story on a moon called Pandora with alien characters (known as Na’vi) that could have belonged to human race if not being double the size, a longer face, sharper features, blue body, white fluorescent marks on the face and tail at the back.

Still, emotions felt are just the same where Na’vis fight for their land, people, pride and right to live.

In a way, the story is no different from what locals may feel in any part of the world when outsiders make an attempt to make inroads into their land to gain hold of their resources. This is what happens to Na’vis as well when their peaceful existence is challenged with American troops entering their world to gain hold of precious minerals worth billions.

While they send one of their men (Sam Worthington) to Pandora by turning him into a Na’vi avatar so that he can understand the way of the natives and talk them into handing over their land, they also nurture a plan of their own.

With round of talks merely being a cover to understand how Na’vis feel and react, there is a deadly operation brewing in the background that would has a single point agenda of destroying and winning.

“Avatar” is an admirable effort because not even once viewers feel that it’s an ‘alien story’ (pun intended) being told. There is a love story brewing between Sam’s Na’vi avatar with the Pandora princess (Zo Saldana) and soon he discovers an altogether new world. Literally. He wages a battle of his own with support from a handful of friends from ’sky people’ along with tribe members and animals belonging to all shapes and sizes.

The story conveys that Cameron is a big fan of Bollywood films from the 60s and the 70s. Just like his last effort “Titanic” which was as Bollywood as it gets, even “Avatar” has quite a few Hindi film references if one starts plotting them on paper.

After watching “Avatar”, the question of paramount importance is - what does one pick and what is it that should be left behind the experience that goes by the name of “Avatar”?

Does one admire Cameron for the sheer vision that he has put to tremendous use in the making of “Avatar”? Does one pick up each and every frame in the film and start bisecting it for every pixel which has been designed to perfection? Or does one silently nod in approval for the familiar world of love, brotherhood, attachment, greed, misunderstandings and the ultimate reunion where spirit of togetherness is the ultimate winner?

In short, “Avatar” is not a film to be seen and then talked about. It’s one to be experienced.

Review:
Film: Paa
Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Harman Baweja
Director: R. Balki
Rating:

When a director takes a road less travelled, it means risk and challenges. Director R. Balakrishnan’s “Paa” journey was difficult but he achieved what he had set out to do — Amitabh Bachchan’s not recognisable in the role of progeria patient Auro, his character is not over the top and the director has managed to convey the message about the disease without much fuss.

Auro’s character is well-etched and Amitabh has certainly presented a new challenge for his colleagues by slipping under the skin of a 13-year-old with wrinkles, cataracts and no hair so convincingly. Not even once does his megastar image overshadow his character.

Big B has an author-backed role and his oneliners are the best — if he tickles your funny bones with his comments in one scene, in the next Auro tugs at your heart strings with his emotional paradoxes.

Amitabh’s make up is such that it doesn’t give him much room to use his facial muscles. Despite that he conveys every emotion he is going through and as the movie progresses one feels a connect with Auro.

In the performance department both Amitabh and Vidya Balan, who plays his single mother, complement each other.

Vidya has given a power-packed performance as a woman who single-handedly raises her progeric child and try to give him a normal life — she is never shown over concerned or fussy.

Amitabh and Abhishek’s scenes together are both funny and emotional.

These are the finer points of the film.

But the film has flaws too. Abhishek is portrayed as an ambitious young politician, fine! But his media bashing spree is annoying!

Balki takes a pot shot at the media by showing that TV journalism is manipulated, but it doesn’t look convincing at all. Abhishek’s dialogues lack substance.

Except his sequences with naughty Auro, most of his scenes don’t fit in the scheme of things.

But laudable parts of the film are P.C. Sreeram’s cinematography and Ilaiyaraaja’s music.

Paresh Rawal is wasted in the film. One wonders why he accepted such a role.

Jaya Bachchan is the surprise package of the film. She appears on the screen to introduce the cast and the crew.

Film: Arya2
Banner: Aditya Arts
Rating: 3/5
Cast: Allu Arjun, Kajal, Navadeep, Sraddha Arya, Ajay, Erina, Brahmanandam, and others
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Lyrics: Chandrabose, Vanamali
Art: Chinna
Producer: Aditya Babu
Director: Sukumar
Release date: 27th November 2009

Sequel culture has started in Telugu film industry way back many years but still, that’s bringing in bigger hype. When something is made as sequel or flavor of a hit film title and cast, the expectations are soaring high. Now Arya-2 has seen light. Let us see how it’s received by audiences.

Story:
It’s the story of two friends Arya (Arjun) and Ajay (Navadeep) who fall in love with same girl Geeta (Kajal).

Arya’s possessiveness for Ajay is the underlined aspect in this movie. But Ajay never likes Arya. Despite, he places him in his company for not being able to bear his torture.

Geeta comes as colleague in their office and story starts from then. But Rajireddy (Mukesh Rishi), the father of Geeta arranges her marriage with the son of another factionist. Arya takes the responsibility to cancel that wedding and enters the village. He says to Ajay that he would bring Geeta for him. How things turn from there…falls rest of the plot.

Performances:
Allu Arjun appeared confusing in the film. His obsession for his friend Ajay has projected him on the lines of a ‘gay’, and many in theatre shouted the word! That’s because of mishandling of narration. On the other hand his contrast in characterization is disgusting. Sometimes he looks convincing and many times confusing. Director should be questioned for that.

Although Navadeep is a very able actor in delivering histrionics he was not given that chance by the director. His character remained dull through out.

Kajal looked innocent, beautiful and charming while Shraddha Das glued some oozing glamour to screen.

‘Ringa Ringa..’ girl has got glowing skin but lacked in raunchy appeal that’s required for an item girl. Others are ok in their shoes.

While every department worked with all dedication it’s the flaw of director that marred the film. Cinematography, Choreography and Music stood high but the director made a confused concoction and ruined entire show. He got confused with screenplay part in second half.

Highlights:
Allu Arjun’s energy levels
Music
Dances by Arjun

Limitations:
Director’s mishandling
Lack of required comedy
Confused screenplay and dialogue

Analysis:
It’s the movie released with many expectations but finally ended up as a disappointment. The masses in theatres yelled like hell when the show has begun but slowly turned pale and passive as the movie is rolling on.

Many are seen walking out of theatres either for a puff of smoke or relax in rest rooms especially in second half. First half is a bit ok. Only songs stood as saving grace by the virtue of Allu Arjun’s dances and music.

Coming to the essence in the movie, it has given many negative signs on a whole: The following doubts would light in the minds of audience:

* Is the protagonist a sadist or a gay or a mentally imbalanced one?
* Is the heroine character-less who runs behind any man who sheds tears for her?
* Is the director conveying that marriage ritual has no significance?
* Is the director introducing the wife-swapping subject on Telugu screen?
* Is the director confused totally?

The first day morning show has given a signal that it’s going to be thumbs down in B,C centers. But A centers may find some oxygen. On a whole it’s a disappointment.
