TEZZ is the second film of the week set within a day. It's breezy and Tezz, as the name suggests. Priyadarshan, best known for comedies, gets his cast off the blocks in a jiffy, and there's action right from the word go. If you are looking for some slick action drama, then hop on to this train with over 500 people on board from Glasgow to London.

Aaakash (Ajay Devgn) has planted a bomb on this train. His demand is a huge sum in ransom which the government is not in favour of. Arjun Khanna (Anil Kapoor) is the Counter Terrorism Command who has just retired. As he prepares to board his flight to India, he is asked for 'just one more day', to help negotiate with the terrorist.

Boman Irani is the head of the London rail network. His daughter is also on the ill-fated train. As the call of a bomb comes in along with the demand for ransom, everyone is on their toes. If the train drops its speed below 60 miles per hour, lives will be lost. Will the ransom demand be met and the bomb diffused in time?

Set in London, the film moves at a brisk pace at most times, but what takes away is the way Indians dominate in the UK - be it a terrorist (Ajay), Counter Terrorism Command (Anil) or Boman. All the plum posts are held by Indians! Moreover, Aakash is not your hardcore terrorist, but just someone who wants to get back at the system for taking away his innocence and jeopardizing his family life.

How he trains himself to handle explosives, or why Megha (Sameera Reddy) or Aadil (Zayed Khan) help him out are deeper mysteries. Why would they want to turn criminals for Aakash? The only logical explanation offered is that Aakash helped shield them when they did not have their proper work documentation. His paperwork too was incomplete. So he was deported, his marriage questioned, his accounts frozen and in short his life thrown out of the window. His wife Kangana Ranaut (absolutely unimpressive) and he failed to get in touch for four years. Aaksah later tells his wife that he sent her many emails. If only she had replied to one, there would have been no situation to bomb a train and his life would not have spiraled out of control!

LIFE KI TOH LAG GAYI is a typical Bambaiya story. Set in Mumbai, director Rakesh Mehta portrays four stories which finally merge into one at the climax. Mehta infuses the elements of love, lust, revenge and ambition. But what is sorely missing is an item number that could have jazzed it up a bit. Considering the setting is in Mumbai, there were opportunities galore to pump up the tempo. Importantly, it has good music that sets the mood of the movie. The rock ballads may not be remembered once you leave the theatre, but it does mesmerize when it's playing during the situation on screen. I would say a good opportunity lost here.
LKTLG is a story about four people. Salman (Kay Kay Menon) is a builder who is in search of those who killed his parents. ACP Chautala (Manu Rishi Chadha) is a tough cop who is a Mama's boy. He has the unenviable task of tracking down drug peddlers within 24 hours. Amol Ganguly (Ranvir Shorey) has been jilted in love. He rushes from the UK where he is working as a chef to 'rescue' his girlfriend. He later realizes that he has been ditched. Finally there is Dolly (Neha Bhasin) who has run away from Chandigarh to make it big in Bollywood. Once here, she realizes she has been conned and refuses to go back until she gets even. There's also Pradhuman Singh, Shakti Kapoor and Asrani. All three are weak links in the plot that actually take away any intensity that the film is trying to build up.

Recently we have had CHAALIS CHAURASI, a typical masala film that spans 24 hours and a few years ago there was EK CHAALIS KI LAST LOCAL. While the Box Office may not have been rattled, these two films were different in their content, and approach. LKTLG too is different from the two (although it spans 24 hours), but the weak links play a spoil sport. Apart from the three mentioned earlier, the track between Neha and the hotel manager and later at a gambling table are contrived. In fact, Neha fails to put soul into her role which could have made a huge difference to the film. Ranvir Shorey, too is a letdown. There's no conviction in his approach to the role as a jilted lover. Pradhuman's forced lunacy too is a disaster.

For a Bollywood debut, Paoli Dam could not have asked for a better deal. The actress who is a known name in Kolkatta has an author-backed role focusing on her character. And to be fair, she does make an impact with her performance. You can't term it as a 'wow debut', but it certainly is a decent performance.

There is no novelty in the story. It is the usual vendetta saga. Kaavya (Paoli Dam) is a newspaper reporter. Along with the help of her friend Vicky (Nikhil Dwivedi), she exposes a scam in a firm dealing in cement. Siddharth (Gulshan Devaiah), the MD of the firm is chastised by his father and asked to set the record straight in 12 hours. He manages to convince the CEO to take the blame. That settled, he offers Kaavya a promising deal in his company. He convinces her that he is impressed with her talent.

Soon, she helps him seal a bigger deal and within a month, she finds herself thrown out from the organization after being humiliated. This after Siddharth has lured her into his bed. Then begins the cat and mouse game, with Kaavya wanting to avenge her humiliation and bring Siddharth to his knees for betraying her trust.

The story per say may not have healthy males rushing to donate sperm. But it does drive home a point. Dr Baldev Chaddha (Annu Kapoor) who runs a fertility clinic and a sperm bank in New Delhi's Daryaganj area aptly explains the reason for cases of childlessness (read infertility). 'Stress,' he says is the one major factor. 'Husband is busy at work, he spends three hours going through and fro and when he is home he is again immersed in work leaving no time for his wife.' On the contrary, he says, villagers are more potent with birth rate on an increase!

The characterization and casting has a huge impact. In fact, that is the biggest plus after the 'out of the box' topic. The situations that arise sometimes have you in splits, and I believe it was never intentional. It's just the sheer genius of the actors and the director to let the situation be and go with the flow. More of that later, as we will first dwell on Dr Chaddha's problem at hand.

Dr Chaddha has more failed cases to his credit than he can handle. The pressure from couples for healthy sperm is mounting and Dr Chaddha chances upon Vicky Arora (Ayushmann Khurrana) in his neighborhood. His vast experience tells him that he is the man for his job. He then begins chasing Vicky to impress upon him the need. Vicky's mother (Dolly Ahluwalia) runs a beauty parlour from home and has to constantly face questions from neighbours as to when Vicky will start working. Vicky finally gives in and when his sample test proves what Dr Chaddha believed, business booms for both of them.

Suddenly, Vicky is flush with funds, not only from Dr Chaddha but also from happy parents who shower Dr Chaddha with money and gifts. Dr Chaddha passes on the 'bonus' to Vicky as well. No one yet knows Vicky's secret.

Vicky soon pursues Ashima Roy (Yami Gautam) who works in a bank. He is a North Indian and she is a Bengali. Ashima knows that Vicky is a business man who deals in 'Handi'crafts', while Dr Chaddha is his business partner. Will she ever learn the truth of her husband's past. And if she does, what will the reaction be? Is it ethical to donate sperm and does children from the donor legally bind the father to the many children he could have sired? While the last question is not addressed, the ethical issues are looked into.

Story

Raj (Ram Charan Tej) is called as betting Raj because of his obsession for betting. James (Ajmal) is his betting enemy. Raj wants 20 lacs for the surgery of his adopted father. James is ready to offer 20 lacs as betting amount if Raj woos and wins over Chaitra (Tamanna). Chaitra is the daughter of a billionaire Bellary (Mukesh Rishi) The rest of the story is all about how Raj makes Chaitra fall for him and the troubles that follow.

Artists Performance

Ram Charan Tej: Ram Charan has proved himself as a terrific man for the masses with his first two films. He has chosen a safe and time-tested mass script this time. He is excellent with dialogues, dances, fights and mannerisms. You can find a lot of references to Gharana Mogudu in his mannerisms.

Others: Tamanna has a weighty role in this movie and does justice. She has danced with amazing fluidity. Ajmal (Rangam fame) plays an important role and he is good. Mukesh Rushi is routine. Brahmanandam’s comedy is partly okay. Ali’s cameo is nice. Parthiban is very good as the father of hero. MS Narayana is a miscast for the role of hero’s adopted father. The sympathy factor will not work out if you cast a comedian for role of a patient with critical illness. Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao did an important role.

Technical departments

Story - screenplay - direction: Story of the film is in an old-format. There are a couple of interesting screenplay twists in the second half. Director Sampath Nandi chose this film to be a tribute to Chiranjeevi’s early 90’s films (Gharana Mogudu, Gang Leader etc). If you look at hero’s entrance scene, he gives away winning money to friend sister’s studies. In Gharana Mogudu, hero gives away winning money to hero friend sister’s marriage (chelli nikka pakka). When the purpose is to make a film as a tribute 90’s films, you can’t expect the direction to be fresh and new. Sampath made sure that there are fun elements in the first half and surprise elements in the second half.

Other departments: Dialogues written by Paruchuri brothers are powerful as well as funny at times. They came out of their trade mark lengthy dialogue pattern and penned short/smart dialogues. There is a controversial dialogue - “Edo choosukuni thodalu kotte type kaadura nenu”. Cinematography by Sameer Reddy is mostly good. Cinematography for a few scenes in the first half is inconsistent. Music scored by Mani Sharma is good - Dilak Dilak and Vaana Vaana being the best in terms of visuals. Editing should have been crisp. Fights are well composed. Production values are grand.

Analysis: First half has a bit of fun. Second half has story and twists. Plus points of the film are Ram Charan Tej and dialogues. On the flip side, freshness in story and better handling of the film would have made this film connect with the contemporary audiences. Racha film is made for fans and masses. This is the first big star film of summer 2012 and it has garnered terrific openings. The success of the film will depend on how masses embrace it.

The much hyped Telugu version of the Tamil movie of the same name '3' has finally hit the screens today. High expectations have built up on this film as the film's hero Dhanush got popular among the Telugu audience with his viral track "Why this kolaveri di", which has achieved national acclaim and also has been used in the movie 'Three'. Moreover, Dhanush happens to be the son-in-law of super star Rajnikant and 'Three' is a home-production coming from the super star family, makes it more likely for the expectations to mount. Let's see now, how far the '3' movie has come near to the expectations.

Story:

The story of 3 is all about the unfathomable love between the lead-pair Ram (Dhanush) and Janani (Shruthi Haasan). While Ram is the son of a wealthy businessman, Janani comes from a middle class background with mother, father and a kid sister - who is born deaf and can't speak. On a raining day, Ram meets Janani on way to school and instantly takes to liking her. He along with one of his friends, keeps on following Janani and finally wins her love and they both get married. Ram and Janani move out in to a separate apartment, gifted by Ram's parents. Things go on well for some time and then suddenly, one day, Ram slits his throat and dies. Janani is left wondering what has gone wrong with Ram and why he has committed suicide? The rest of the film unfolds the reason for Dhanush taking the extreme step.

Analysis :

The story itself is wrongly chosen. It's weak, not properly woven and doesn't have a convincing point. At times, the film's narration seems to be dragging and slow. Three is entirely shown in flashbacks and revolves around just three characters - Ram, Janani and their friend Shankar. There are no commercial elements in the story which can hold the viewer's attention for long. The only plus point of the movie 3 is the performance of the artistes, especially the lead pair - Dhanush and Shruthi Haasan.

It is their marvelous performance, that keeps the audience from going out of the theater. One more thing has to be specially mentioned here, as school kids - Dhanush and Shruthi's performance is extraordinary. Here the director (Aishwarya Dhanush) also succeeded in depicting sprouting up of teenage-love in a very natural way. Since the movie is all in flashbacks, I do not want to go into the details of the story, or else it may mar the interest of the viewer.

TeluguOne Perspective :

The movie 3 (Three) is completely devoid of commercial elements usually found in the dubbed films. People who have flare for watching 'off-the-leak' films, may see it to admire the artistes.

The performance of the lead artistes Dhanush and Shruti Haasan is commendable and should be appreciated for their attempt. The movie doesn't appeal for front bench viewers as it is complex in execution. Neither entertaining nor commercial, the movie is a bit dragging in the whole. However, debutant director Aishwarya Dhanush has made a decent debut with 'Three' and needs applause for choosing this versatile subject. Three would have fared better if it has commercial elements.

Performances:

Dhanush and Shruti Hassan has deliverable a remarkable performance in this movie. Aishwarya Dhanush is impressive in her first directorial venture and is worth of an applause.

Technicalities:

Editing by Kola Bhaskar is brisk. Cinematography by Velraj is a treat to watch. Music by Anirudh Ravichandran is foot tapping and the re-recording is good. The production values are superb.

Final Word: 3 Review: Watch at your leisure, with an eye for brilliant performances from the lead pair.
