Story

Siddu (Siddardha) has everything in life, but in excess amounts. His father (Prakash Raj) decides on what is good for Siddu. He selects the girl of his choice to Siddardha. That is when Siddu meet the girl Hasini (Genelia) he has waited all his life for. Now he has a complex situation. First he need to propose to Hasini and win her over. Then convince his over-obsessive father. Then make Hasini’s father accept him. Then break the engagement. And so on!

Artists Performance

Bommarillu is the best example of perfect casting. Here is another tailor-made role for Siddardha. He is very natural, charming and elegant. The most crucial part of his performance comes in the confrontation scene with Prakash Raj. Genelia steals the show with her mind-blowing performance as a happy-go-lucky and innocent girl. She is like an angel with lot of purity. Savitha Reddy (dubbing artist) has given her best output for the Hasini character in this film. Prakash Raj is at his best in this role that demands extraordinary performance. One wonders why Jayasudha is taken for such a role which has got very few dialogues, but her performance in confrontation scene with Prakash Raj in climax is enough to justify why it takes a natural actress like Jayasudha to do that role. After many years Sunil has done a superb comedy role. His expressions as servant in Prakash Raj’s house remind us of comedians of golden era. Kota is very good in the role of Genelia’s father. Sudeepa is terrific as aspiring beautician. Satya Krishnan is cute. Bill Bitra is very smart as kid in Prakash Raj house. Dharmavarapu Subramanyam is neat. Chitram Seenu, Vijay and Ravi Varma are adequate as friends of hero.

Technical Departments:

Story - screenplay - Direction: Bhaskar arrives with this film as a terrific talent that makes Telugu film industry proud. There is lot of freshness in the film. Director understands the nuances of filmmaking extremely well and applies them all with perfection for his debut film. Story of the film deals with the relationship that sours between a good father and a good son. Screenplay of the film is tight. Direction is exceptionally good. He dealt both fun scenes and emotional scenes with same degree of dexterity. At one point of time, Bollywood produced great flicks like DDLJ and KKHH. I always wondered why can’t we have such films in Telugu. Telugu film industry too produced such films, but most of them are inspired ones. Bommarillu is one film that matches the brilliance of above mentioned films.

Music: Music of the film is very good and background music is excellent. The scenes in the first half are so good that songs come as speed breakers to the narration. The songs in second half are excellently blended into the narration with good emotional quotient. The choreography for ‘Bommani Geeste’ song (4th in the film) is exemplary. The pathos song that comes in parts in second half is brilliant.

Other departments: Cinematography by Vijay K Chakravarthy is priceless. He makes this film a visual treat with rich and vibrant colors. Dialogues by Abburi Ravi are excellent. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh is crisp. Artwork is fabulous. Dil Raju produced this film with high standards of filmmaking. Dil Raju knows the recipe for success and this time the recipe is more yummy than his earlier films.

Analysis: First half of the film is excellent. Second half is even better. The last 20 minutes of the film is extraordinary with perfect emotions. This film is so good that I don’t find any negative points. The huge plusses of this film are director Bhaskar, perfect cast (Genelia’s exceptional performance), priceless piece of work by Vijay K Chakravarthy, appropriate music by Devi Sri Prasad and good judgment and involvement by Dil Raju. If director Bhaskar can make films of other genres the way he made Bommarillu, he is the one who can take the Telugu cinema to the next level. After a gap of 44 months, it gives me a great pleasure to give a ‘Jeevi Rating’ of 4.5 for a Telugu cinema in the form of Bommarillu.

Tail piece: Watching Bommarillu in today’s morning show at Prasadz is like sitting in a ladies special show (as 75% of the patrons were good looking women). The film is so good that people are refusing to leave the auditorium as the titles are scrolling.

Now, what to say of a film that aims to grab eyeballs through the popping cleavages of its leading ladies and the silly antics of their lustful boss with the name Hardik, very similar to Harddick. Hello Darling, a rehash of the 1980s Hollywood movie Nine To Five, is a sex comedy about the exploitation of women at work places and gender equality.

Mansi (Gul Panag), Candy (Celina Jaitley) and Satvati (Eesha Koppikar) work in an office under a boss (Javed Jaffery) whose life and every action is driven by libido. Ignoring his dowdy wife (Divya Dutta), the incorrigible lecher doesn’t miss half a chance of hitting upon women with the hope of having some ‘good time’ with them.

When things come to a head, the three women decide to teach the horny Hardik a lesson. On the other hand, the boss’s wife (Divya) takes the help of a hubby reforming NGO, Pati Sudharak Samiti, with its hardliner head (Seema Biswas) who adopts shock methods like a volley of slaps to bring the stray husbands back on fidelity track.

There’s confusion galore after a case of mistaken identity. There’s a dead body, eunuchs, thieves, dumb docs and many more as the plot goes haywire and cooks up a hodgepodge in the name of comedy. Sadly, none of it works.

Director Manoj Tiwari hardly gets anything right in Hello Darling. The comedy is not just slapstick and inane, it borders on daftness. The double meaning dialogues don’t add to laughs either. Many situations seem deliberately stitched in the plot to make the proceedings funny. The sequence when the three actresses pose as nurses and kidnap the dead body from the hospital may draw some chuckles.

The film’s three leading ladies seem to be in competition to see who hams the most, a contest which Celina wins hands down. Javed Jaffery as the lusty lech is over the top, while Divya Dutta comes up with the only credible performance.

All in all, Hello Darling is rife with silliness. But if you happen to be a titillation seeker like the testosterone driven boss Hardik, you might find a silver lining in the cleavages of the hot babes.

Happy Happy Ga Movie Review

Movie : Happy Happy Ga
Rating: 1.75/5
Cast : Varun Sandesh, Vega, Sharanya Mohan, Ali, Ravi Shankar, M S Narayana
Directed by : Priya Saran
Produced by : Vadlamudi Durga Pras
Banner : Ocean Movies
Music : Mani Sharma
Release Date : 2010-08-20

Story:

A triangular love story among three young hearts is basically the story of Happy Happy Ga. Santosh (Varun Sandesh) is a romantic at heart who falls in love with every girl he sees. Pooja (Vega) does not believe in love as she has seen her parents get divorced despite being in love before marriage. Her uncle and aunt keep fighting even though theirs is a love marriage and so Pooja keeps away from loving anyone. Priya (Sharanya Mohan) is unknown to love, when she gets to know about it she is fully committed and she shows true love. Love is all about being true to one self and the other. The confluence of these three ideologies forms the story. The picture revolves round Santosh and his happy go lucky attitude and his blind love for Pooja.

Artists Performance:

Direction is loose and wayward. The story does not create any interest and runs on expected lines. Varun Sandesh tries everything in the book to keep the audience engrossed, but he does not lift the spirit of the film. The less said about heroine Vega the better. She is a flop show. Sharanya Mohan looks cute, but that is where she begins and ends. Ravi Shankar as villain is ineffective and bizarre. Comedy by Ali and M S Narayana is stale and expected.

Plus Points:

Varun Sandesh's acting and dancing.
Sincerity in effort!
Clean move, no Vulgarity.

Minus Points:

Weak direction and screenplay!
The ending is unexpected and is an anticlimax. Confused conclusions drawn.
Too many twists at the end!
Casting misplaced!
Music and lyrics dull!

Analysis:

The naming is a misnomer. There is more sadness in the film than happiness. No nativity means audience will avoid this film. Love stories need good music, but the music is average except for one song. Camera angles look feeble and out of focus. Screenplay is amateurish and archaic.

Verdict: Avoid this film; there are better things to do in life than bearing this sadness.

Rating: 1.5/5
Cast : Charmi, Ajay, Kota, Siva Prasad, Nasser, Prabhakar, Ali, Ravu Ramesh, Omkar, M S, master Bharath, Amit, Tarzan, Duvvasi Mohan, Chalapathi Rao etc
Directed by : KRK Pavan
Produced by : Nalluri Rajasekhar
Banner : Frames Entertainments
Music : Devi Sri Prasad
Release Date : 2010-08-13

Story:

A disjointed tale, the story begins with Malleswari (Charmi) a gutsy girl who is also a choreographer. She trains a bunch of kids and they are all set to compete for the first prize in the 'Sye Aata' dance competition being held in a TV channel. The team heads to Hyderabad from Vizag and here, Malleswari chances upon the notorious rowdy Shankar Babai (Kota). He has a bitter enmity with Mahadev Pandit (Siva Prasad). Twist of events get Malleswari in the middle of their feud and Babai takes the kids so that Malleswari does what he says. Whether she does it or not and what is the shocking twist in the climax forms the rest of the story.

Artist performances:

Charmi does her best to get the film onto track and from her end, there are no complaints as she has given it her full. Kota must be given full credit to capture the attention of the viewers and also score points with his performance. Ajay was good but his role was weak. Nasser was hardly there. Siva Prasad was upto the mark. Prabhakar was okay. Ali gave few smiles. Ravu Ramesh was not given his worth. Omkar was overacting as usual. M S was usual. Master Bharath made his presence felt. The others did their bit as required but not that valuable a contribution.

Plus points:

* Charmi Factor
* Kota's Performance
* Two Songs
* Background Score

Minus points:

* Confusing Storyline
* Inconsistent Screenplay
* Silly Comedy
* Beaten Track In Plot
* Technical Values
* Weak Direction
* Lack Of Depth In Characters
* No Emotional Intensity In Key Scenes

Analysis:

Right from the word go, the film looks to have been made just for the heck of making it. The concept of dance competition in reality show would have gathered some attention but instead of focusing on that, the director went ahead and mixed it with rowdy clashes, suspense murders, one social message and what not. Due to this, there was never a time when the audience could actually connect to the film. The film is very weak in all aspects except the Charmi factor and Kota performance. Box office will find it hard to smile for this one.

Verdict: Pathetic!

The Film
Badmash is a typical commercial package with a soup of romance, college campus revelry and comedy.
The Synopsis
Avinash (Naga Siddharth) is a carefree young man who hates rules and discipline. He joins an engineering college where the principal is a strict disciplinarian who is averse even to sports and serious about studies. The principal’s daughter Amrutha (Ekta Khosla) also studies in the same college does not believe in campus romance but finally falls in love

Badmash Movie Review
with Avinash. The principal comes to know that his daughter is having a love affair but does not know with whom. Avinash telephones the principal and says he is the lover of his daughter and challenges him to find out who he is. The rest of the story deals with how the principal identifies Avinash that leads to a predictable conclusion.
The Performances
New comers Naga Siddhart and Ekta Khosla fail to impress with their emoting or dialogue delivery. Chandra Mohan carries on with his usual composure. Dharmavarapu and MS Narayana try in vain to tickle the funny-bones. All others go through their motions.
The Techniques

Badmash Movie Review
The story is based on the premise that only studies on the campus will not make a student mature. But the way it is developed with contrived incidents makes a mockery of the theme and projects that indisciplined boys only succeed in love if they do some sort of good samaritan deeds. The screenplay is sloppy and adds to the woes of narration. Music and cinematography are ok.
The Verdict
It is better for Vandemataram Srinivas to confine himself to music direction and not venture into unknown territories like film direction. Badmash smashes the audience with insipid story-telling.

Review:
Help Movie Review | Help Hindi Movie Review | Help (2010) Horror Film Story,Review and Rating
Help Movie Review By Taran Adarsh . Horror films produced in Bollywood follow the same route. At least most of them. The aatma/spirit seeks revenge for the wrong done to him/her. The spirit breathes fire, spits venom, scares the daylights out of the wrong-doers and eliminates them one by one. But, in the final tally, the protagonist puts an end to the aatma’s atrocities. All’s well that ends well.

HELP is no different. It follows the same rules, except that it has an interesting twist to offer, which, again, is sure to have its share of advocates and adversaries. Unfortunately, the screenplay, based on an interesting concept, gets repetitive at times and excruciatingly slow at places. Besides, the unspoken rule for horror films is that they ought to scare you at the right places, but barring a sequence or two, which do give you jhatkas, the film lacks in the scary quotient. Simply put, the chills are missing.

Final word? Strictly okay!

Vic [Bobby Deol] and Pia [Mugdha Godse] are going through a difficult time in their marriage and in the midst of these troubled times they have to rush to Mauritius to take care of Pia’s ailing father. On landing in Mauritius and going back to Pia’s old family home, Pia is confronted by her distant past.

Little do they know that there’s something in this house. When Pia finds out that she is pregnant, this vicious spirit possesses Pia and starts killing people close to her. Now Vic must race against time to save his pregnant wife, who seems to be possessed by the spirit of her twin sister Dia, who died when they were both 5 years old.

With the help of a parapsychologist, Aditya [Shreyas Talpade], Vic discovers the dark and terrifying truth behind Pia’s family history and breaks the curse that has been put on them.

The very first sequence of HELP raises the bar and you expect the remainder to be as riveting or perhaps, more. But HELP is akin to a game of see-saw: Engaging and non-engaging at regular intervals. The writing, somehow, is not thoroughly convincing and at places, gives an impression of being a script of convenience. The writers [Deepak Pawar and Viddesh Malandkar] come up with really spooky situations at times, but switch over to the tried-and-tested situations to take the story forward.

The finale is a letdown, since one can’t decipher how and why the spirit is scared of mirrors. Even the manner in which Shreyas Talpade is sidelined in the climax makes you feel dejected. Wasn’t he supposed to free the family from the spirit? So why shift the focus on Bobby?

Director Rajeev Virani has shot a number of sequences very well. The execution of the subject is truly stylish. The writing vacillates between interesting and been-there-seen-that kind of situations consistently. The songs are okay. Cinematography [Dhimant Vyas] is eye-catching.

Bobby pitches in a sincere performance. Mugdha shows marked improvement over her previous performances. Shreyas Talpade enacts his part well. Jyoti Dogra is efficient. The actor enacting the role of Mugdha’s father is adequate.

Don Seenu Movie Review
Behind the Movie Don Seenu: Raviteja’s natural kick was missing in all his relases following ‘Kick.’ With young and talented Gopichand Malineni holding the meagfone for the first time, sexy Shriya making a comeback with fresher Anjana Sukhani into Tollywood and Mani Sharma getting into his flow once again; arrival of ‘Don Seenu’ is regarded as a celebration for masses who always look eagerly for gun shot entertainers from Raviteja. Let us see, was this ‘Don Seenu’ really that powerful to rule the hearts of audience?

In the Movie Don Seenu: Seenu hails from poor family in a village who dreams of becoming a Don from his childhood. To achieve his dream, Seenu escapes from village leaving his family and grows up by renaming himself as Don Seenu (Raviteja).

Don Seenu now enters Hyderabad to join any of the Don gangs and reside with his childhood friends. Machiraju (Sayaji Shinde) and Narsing (Sreehari) are heads of two rival Don groups in the city who work under International Don Mukesh Duggal (Mahesh Manjrekar) operating from Dubai. Machiraju’s sister Deepu (Shriya) and Narsing’s sister Priya (Anjana Sukhani) are best friends living together in Germany pursuing their education.

Don Seenu, in order to get into the recognition of either of the Dons beats up Duggal’s brother in Hyderabad and immediately gets a call from Machiraju who cleverly allots Don Seenu a job of trapping Priya (Narsing’s sister) into his love, there by making his line clear for matrimonial alliance with Duggal family by offering his sister Deepu’s hand.

Don Seenu and his friend Ramu (Ali) now travel to Germany and start their trials. But, here comes the twist as Don Seenu is wrongly informed about Priya and he pulls Deepu into his love track instead of Priya. As soon as the task is accomplished, Don Seenu lands in India along with Priya and Deepu. Here starts the new problem for Don Seenu, when he becomes aware about Deepu. On the other side, Narsing is happy for Machiraju falling into his own trap.

To save himself from Machiraju, Don Seenu now pulls even Priya into his love and starts a new game to spoil the dreams of Machiraju and Narsing before they get into a relation with Duggal. To clear off all this puzzle, Duggal sends his Secreatry Vishwas (Brahmanandam) who creates further more confusions.

Finally when Priya and Deepu come together to question Don Seenu about his love, here comes the major, final twist in the form of Don Seenu’s sister (Kasturi). Small flash back where in it will be revealed that Narsing is the husband of Don Seenu’s sister Kasturi who leaves his wife for politics played by his friend turned foe Machiraju. It’s the time when good and bad gets seperated and Duggal enters the scene to lead the movie to climax. How did Machiraju and Narsing realise their mistake? Whom did Don Seenu really love? What happened to Duggal? form rest of the story.

Values of the Movie Don Seenu: Story in itself is massive and lengthy one tough to put it on paper. With too many twists and turns mixed with right doses of comedy; newcomer Gopichand has brought out a readymade entertainer for all the sections. Script was written so tight with an intention not to confuse and bore the audience at any point of time. Kona Venkat and Gopichand have come out with shining colors. Mani Sharma’s music is one of the best in recent times. With catchy tunes and marvelous background score, he elevated the substance in Gopichand. Camerawork by Sameer Reddy made the movie look bright. Special interest shown in using Shriya and Anjana reaped benefits for Sameer Reddy. Editing by Gowtham Raju was superb as the the tight grip and momentum in the story was held in tact. Production values by RR Movie Makers were top notch.

Performance wise Raviteja was again at his best pouring Joules of energy into each and every frame. Never was a drop in his energy and performance. Natural mannerisms from Raviteja once again made audience to go loud in whistles. Amitabh Bachchan’s dialogues gave extra charm to his role. Shriya is gorgeous again proving his bang re-entry. With occassional and sensuous skin show in trendy costumes, Shriya is sure to once again pain the young hearts. Anjana Sukhani is not a natural beauty but oomph wise she is too hot to handle (Where is the handle?). Sreehari and Sayaji Shinde shared equal portions on screen and they were again at their best. Sreehari used too many typical Hyderabadi and Telangana words which is good work. Brahmi’s role as Vishwas was hillarious as theatres are going topless. Mahesh Manjrekar has got only a small portion that becomes important during the climax and he was stylish. Ali as Ramu and Venu Madhav as Madhu Pitre shared major part of comedy in first half and undoubtedly this is their best in recent times. Kasturi, Surekha Vani, Sudha, Raghu Babu, Brahmaji, Kasi Vishwanath were routine.

Out of the Movie Don Seenu: First fellows who get major portion of credit with this movie are Kona Venkat for his mass appealing dialogues and Gopichand for his rope tight screenplay and effective narration mixed with touch of humor in each and every scene…ofcourse well accomplished by Raviteja. Especially the track between Raviteja and Brahmanandam, Ali and Venu Madhav are to pain your funny bone. Shriya and Anjana Sukhani’s glamor mixed skin show with oomph filled on the screen will entertain B & C centres thoroughly. Choreography in Raja Raja and Title song was amazing. The way Raviteja enacted Big B needs a round of applause.

Entire first half was a laughing riot with little movement in the story. Interval bang was impressive and second half, it was a tough job for Gopichand to maintain the logic and fun together without missing the story track. Even though, drama in second half goes on expected lines but Brahmi’s entrance has again raised the movie into top gear. Addition of family sentiment to push movie towards climax is well conceived without breaking the fun element in story and that was fastly closed.

Raviteja’s energy, Gopciahnd’s twisting style of narration, Shriya & Anjana’s oomph quotient, Mani Sharma’s background score, Venu Madhav, Ali & Brahmi’s too much comedy, rich production values are huge plus points while too many cinematic liberties, extensive usage of wires in stunts, missing of elements for Class audience may serve minute negatives.

For all those who expected 'Don Seenu' as a plot of Underworld Mafia, let me clear...this is a pure mass flick with loads of comedy and no connection to Don stories from any perspective.

Undoutedly ‘Don Seenu’ will have a good run at BO, especially B & C centres audience will embrace the movie readily and this is a ‘Kicking’ experience for Raviteja Fans after ‘Kick.’

Don Seenu: Mass Raja’s Mast Masala Entertainer.

Brahma Lokam To Yama Lokam Review
Behind the Movie Brahma Lokam To Yama Lokam: After a hiatus comedy king Rajendra Prasad seen on the posters of this movie as Lord Brahma, hero Shivaji getting back into his comfort zone after disastrous ‘Taj Mahal,’ Sonia aka Shravs of ‘Happy Days’ trying for a heroine image, bumper lady Aarthi Agarwal’s erotic show and an interesting socio fantasy subject expected. These are few of the attention grabbing factors for this Brahma Lokam to Yama Lokam Via Bhoo Lokam which has arrived in theatres today. Let us see, on which Lokam do audience land after watching this?

In the Movie Brahma Lokam To Yama Lokam: Movie starts directly in ‘Satya Lokam’ where Lord Brahma (Rajendra Prasad) is busy writing the fates (Thala Raathalau) of new born population. During a weak moment, Brahma is vexed up with his married life after a small fight with wife Saraswathi (Kalyani). Result is that Brahma writes up the fate of a new born girl on earth to die as soon as she enters into married life. A shift of focus and now come to our earth as this girl grows up.

Srinu (Shivaji), studying degree from last five years falls in love with collegemate Swetha (Sonia), who has a villain brother-in-law. In parallel is the story of Srinu’s friend Shobhan Babu (Venu Madhav) struggling for first night with his wife (Jyothi) due to his rebel aunty (Shakuntala). Shohan Babu in order to win in the first night, performs penance for Lord Brahma and wins a bowl of milk as a boon, drinking upon which could offer him the power of reading the fate of others. Situations turn up in a way that, Srinu drinks this milk instead of Shobhan Babu and acquires the power of reading the future of others.

Srinu uses this power very frequently saving the lives of people thus becoming an obstacle to Lord Yama (Jayaprakash Reddy) and Chitragupta (AVS) in performing their duties. Knowing this Aadi Para Shakthi (Laya) orders Brahma, Yama and Chitragupta to get back onto earth and find Srinu to take back the power. Brahma uses beauties of Rambha (Aarthi Agarwal) as a weapon to woo Srinu but fails.

Finally Srinu agrees with Brahma to resolve his power only after marriage with Swetha. Here comes the twist, Swetha is none other than the same girl who would die soon after the marriage. How did Srinu tackle with Brahma and Yama to win the life of Swetha forms the climax.

Values of the Movie Brahma Lokam to Yama Lokam: Rajendra Prasad as Lord Brahma, the creator is one of the major assets for this film. Though he had very short role yet the CG work done to show four heads is commendable. Once again RP gives settled performance and his body language steals the show. Next Shivaji has done the role of Srinu with ease. Sonia pairs up with Shivaji in this movie. Venu Madhav generated enough laughs and he has got a lengthy and key character in entire movie. Aarthi Agrwal has got a spicy role where she tried to show her oomph in enough doses. Jayaprakash Reddy as Yama scored marks for his dance rather than action. Remaining AVS, Pragathi, MS Narayana, Jyothi, Shakuntala, Raghu Babu, Kausha were handled well.

G. Nageshwara Rao’s story picking was innovative.Nageshwara Rao’s dialogues and direction bothered to utilise the casting well rather than making them to create an impact on the story. Adult comedy was on a high level with double meaning dialogues throughout the mvoie. The usage of Graphics in small budget movies was shown gracefully in this movie.Music by Srilekha is routine including the back ground. Camerawork by Vasu was impressive only in dealing with divine characters. Editing by Nagi Reddy was good as he dealt a very lengthy story with ease. Production values of Utopia Productions were inconsistent.

Brahmalokam to Yama Lokam is a spicy meal with a mix of love and fantasy

Story:
A stale tale, the story begins with Ramana (krishnudu) who fails to pass his degree and studies in the same class. Meanwhile, his father (jayaprakash reddy) is an ex-MLA who is quite corrupted. He wants to marry Ramana to the richest politician. However, Ramana has got a good reason to fail, he is in love with his classmate Lavanya (shraddha) and for his luck, she comes to the same college as his lecturer. Ramana's attempts to woo her go in vain as she has a story. Her father Anjaneyulu (avs) is a beggar so she deems this relationship impossible. However, Ramana is determined to marry her and also hatches a plan to teach his father a lesson. What happens after that forms the rest of the story.
Presentation:
The director has come up with a rather painful tale and neither is the presentation nor narrative upto the mark. The script was lousy, the screenplay was pathetic, the dialogues were plain. Background score was good but songs could have been better. Cinematography was alright. Costumes were apt and editing was average. Art department made its presence felt. Krishnudu does his bit as required but his character didn't have that elevation, Shraddha Arya looks sizzling hot but no glamour show from her this time, AVS was okay and made his presence felt, Jayaprakash Reddy gave few funny moments, Ali, Brahmi, Venu and Raghubabu were hardly there. Kovai Sarala was loud, Murali Mohan was decent, the others didn't have much to offer.
Conclusion:
The major drawback in the film is its story and when the plot is weak, nothing can be done about the other aspects. While the first half is somewhat okay things get really bad in the second half and some ridiculous scenes engage the audience. Overall, the film looks cheap and while the attempt convey a message is appreciable, the makers must realize that there is a way for that. This will sink at the box office in no time.

July 24, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): First things first. This is not, repeat not, a comedy. Not by any yardstick. For those expecting a typical Priyadarshan-Akshay Kumar comedy Khatta Meetha is not your cup of tee-hee. For those who know there’s a more reflective and ruminative side to both the prolific director and the leading man, here’s the thing.

Khatta Meetha takes stinging satirical swipes at the epidemic disease of corruption that has taken over the Indian ethos. Tragically the treatment is quite often heavyhanded. But the statement never drowns in the diatribe. Priyadarshan tends to fill up the outer edges with a profusion of incidental characters and over-elaborate gags and jokes that hold themselves in place in a world of unmitigated chaos like De Dana Dan.

Here the clutter and the clamour just make you feel the director needed to respect his own tone of sobriety in this longish tickling treatise on malpractices in the middleclass.

The plot is a bit of a tangle. Akshay Kumar’s family of discontented mal-paani-practitioners is a universe of brutish brothers and screechy sisters-in-law, and silently-suffering parents (played by those wonderful actors Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Aroona Irani).

It’s a family of corrupt road contractors and initially, Akshay seems the most wickedly immoral of them all. But hang on! As the narrative – at time plodding – moves forward we begin to understand the wacked-out sinister yet satirical, chaotic yet orderly, corrupt yet weirdly-ethical world of Sachin Tichkule.

Here’s a character that seems to have been written only for Akshay Kumar. And he gets hold of the ‘muddle’-class morality of Tichkule’s world with delightful earnestness. Frequently Akshay is exasperating in his efforts to explain why the middle class is in a state of self-destructive decline. But it isn’t the actor to blame. It is the nature of the material offered to the actor.

The domestic and professional world of Scahin Tichkule is not easy to penetrate. Akshay, demonstrating primetime ripeness in his body language and repertoire of Chaplinesque expressions, enters this wacky wounded world of the exploited and the damned with extraordinary empathy.

Akshay’s is a performance that is far more accomplished than it may seem to the popcorn province. He’s exasperating in his directness. He’s partly a cartoon character, partly an emblem of our times and wholly entertaining in his chaotic comprehension of the inadequacies of world we’ve inherited from the freedom fighters and brutally disfigured.

But alas! Akshay’s character is too wordy in his tongue type. The hallmark of Charlie Chaplin’s social comment was his silent expressions of protest. Akshay’s character and the film on the whole are much too verbose. The characters are constantly talking, as though not speaking would take away the audiences’ attention. A film making a social comment didn’t have to over-state its case so blatantly.

But the words do not cut into the narrative’s basic flow of tongue-in-cheek satire. Some sequences such as the one involving the steamroller and the elephant consume too much footage. The art of understatement eludes this political statement.

Trisha Krishnan in wearing chunky ear-rings severe bureaucratic expressions makes an unusual debut. She is different from the short-skirted hotties. But whether that difference makes a difference in Hindi cinema, time will tell.

Khatta Meetha stands tall in its message of restoring a semblance of moral order in the middle class. The last half-hour after Sachin Tickule’s sister is murdered, is thoroughly gripping. And the fight between Akshay and the corrupt goons in the crowded lanes is chilling in its realism.

Realism is a remotely but decidedly obtainable component in this parodic parable on the rotten fruits of excessively materialistic aspirations in post-Independence India.

Technically polished and many notches superior to Akshay Kumar’s other recent entertainers Khatta Meetha conveys that sweet-sour taste of a universe that has rapidly degenerated into absolute self-gratification.

See it for what the film leaves unsaid, though that’s hard to do when everyone is ceaselessly talking.

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai – Amongst Bollywood’s best underworld sagas
Starring: Ajay Devgan, Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Prachi Desai and Randeep Hooda
Rating:
Director: Milan Luthria

July 30, 2010 (Sampurn Wire):You seldom get period dramas in Bollywood which are not about historical characters. This year that way has been very lucky that way. Couple of months ago we had Badmaash Company and now we have Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. Of course both are completely different from each other, the first being set in the fast 90s and the latter being set in colourful 70s. And director Milan Luthria makes enough efforts to make OUATIM look very authentic and worth a watch for its settings.

Settings apart the film has its pluses with some superb performances and great dialogues. However the problem with the film is the not so new storyline and the very slow screenplay. Though the characters are well established and well rounded the writer takes the entire first half to do that without much movement in the story. And then as you expect fireworks in the second half it fizzles out too fast.

OUATIM is the story of two gangsters. While one was ethical the other was reckless. It has inspirations of the characters of infamous smuggler Haji Mastan and now infamous don Dawood Ibrahim. The film is about Sultan (Ajay Devgn) who labored through his childhood and became a smuggler as he grew up completely ruling the sea routes. He however always preferred keeping the city clean and never smuggles which was against his conscience. Shoaib (Emraan Hashmi) is inspired by Sultan’s life as a child and wants to it as big. He is a son of a police officer but has no inclination towards the law. As he grows up he makes his way to Sultan’s gang and proves himself good enough to go up the ladder fast. However his reckless ambitions soon outgrew Sultan and he decided to take over the city on his own.

The story is built on the line – ‘behind the myth is the city’s greatest betrayal story’. The screenplay does not give much importance to the betrayal. The slow pace of the first half could be a put off. Also funnily Sultan and his girlfriend Rehana never seem to age as they continue to look the same even as Shoaib grows from a child to rustic young crook.

The film has its pluses. Luthria has taken care of everything – right from trains to cars to sunglasses to shoes to buildings! Everything takes us back to the 70s. Luthria handles the dramatic moments well and great use has been made of dialoguebaazi. All actors have come up with some memorable performances. Ajay Devgn’s overpowering presence is matched by Emraan’s charm. Kangna Ranaut and Prachi Desai do their bits well though they don’t bear many consequences on the story itself. Randeep Hooda is effective as the police office.

Overall, ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai’ is an entertainer. It does not need any effort to be understood of liked. It is the mere magic of characters created that makes this film worth watching.
