Saradaga Kasepu Movie Review

Movie : Saradaga Kasepu
Rating: 2.75/5
Cast : Allari Naresh, Srinivas Avasarala, Madhurima, Ahuthi Prasad, MS Narayana, Kondavalasa, Jayalalitha, Sana, Krishna Bhagawan, Ramya Sree, Jaya Prakash Reddy etc
Directed by : Vamsi
Produced by : ML Kumar Chowdary
Banner : Sri Keerthi Creations
Music : Chakri
Release Date : 2010-09-17

Story:

Ranga Babu (Allari Naresh) is a car driver and he is close friends with Srinivas (Srinivas) since childhood. Srinivas is from a rich family and he lives in the US. The story takes a turn when Srinivas comes to India for getting married and his parents (Jeeva, Sana) want him to tie the knot to Raja Rao's (Ahuti Prasad) daughter Manimala (Madhurima) who lives in a different place. However, Srinivas has a condition that he must know the girl's character. For this, he asks Ranga Babu to take his role while he becomes the driver. As expected, misunderstandings and confusions arise, what happens from there forms the rest of the story.

Artist performances:

Allari Naresh was the show stealer as usual, he carries out his role with aplomb and scores on the comedy front. Madhurima is a naturally seductive girl so it is important she gets a proper make up artist and costume designer, that didn't happen here. Performance wise, she was active. Srinivas Avasarala was good. Krishna Bhagawan was his usual satire self and he managed to get few smiles for his lines. Jeeva was contained while Sana was apt. MS Narayana was usual, Jayalalitha was regular, Jayaprakash Reddy's potential was not used to the fullest, Ahuthi Prasad was another performer with some interesting dialogues.

Plus points:

* Allari Naresh
* Dialogues
* Song picturization
* Madhurima's glamour
* Comedy

Minus points:

* No proper storyline
* Inconsistent screenplay
* Typical Vamsi characters floating around in the screen
* No logic in the plot
* Feel missing in few scenes

Analysis:

This is a film which will work with those who understand the Vamsi style of movie making. It is not rocket science but then his comedy, his presentation is typical and one has to get used to it to actually relish it. The technical values were alright and performances were good but due to the poor content and lack of a proper theme, there are hiccups in the script. However the on and off hilarious situations make up for the defect. Though it is not much of a brain feeder, it just gives a light feel once it is completed. At the box office, it could have strong openings due to Allari Naresh and Vamsi brand.

Verdict: Time pass…not for those who look for logic and story

Story

Soundarya is the journalist who is harassed by the misdeeds of Deva, the most influential person and an underworld mafia don in the city. Deva is apparently as Hindu devotee who is bent upon teaching Geeta to every human he meets.

Then she happens to see an accident in which a bunch of rowdies die. She takes the opportunity to create a fictional character called 'Azaad'. She writes a letter that Azad has done this assassination to end the rowdy deeds in the city. And the word spread like wildfire that there is a guy called 'Azaad' who is the protector of common man. Soundarya takes more opportunities like popularize the character of 'Azaad'.

There is a humble guy called Chandra Sekhar Azaad (Nag) in Rajahmudry who has a widowed mother, a beautiful sister and a cute maradalu, Kanaka Maha Laxmi (Shilpa Shetty) to take care of. As his sister's marriage is fixed, Azaad go to Hyderabad to get the five lacs he saved in a chit fund company.

There he happens to be involved in a few bomb blasting incidents and avoids all the bomb blasts happen without his knowledge. People start thinking that he is the Azaad. And soundarya meets him and explains him about her mission of ending nonsense in the city. Chandrasekhar Azaad, who is more interested in taking money from Chitfund Company and go back to village to participate in his sister's marriage refuses to don the role of legendry character Azaad.

But later on that chitfund company turns out to be bogus one. And they cheat Azaad. By looking at victims committing suicides, Azaad wants to don the mask of 'Azaad' and stop corruption in the city. All the incidents that happen make Deva feel disturbed.

Azaad also comes to know that Deva is not a Hindu, but a Muslim terrorist who is in a mission to destroy India. And the rest of the film is about how Azaad assassinates Deva and his gang of goons. If you want to know how Azaad put an end to the Deva's life and whom he did marry ultimately (Soundarya or Shilpa Shetty), you gotta watch this film on the giant screen.

Performances

Nag: Nag, who donned a new avatar as a man next door with 'Nuvvu Vastavani' carries his charm in this film too. Except for the climax, his character is driven by the intelligence of Soundarya character. Nag shows his sentimental action in this film towards his sister role. He carried the film with his charm and elegance.

Soundarya: She is given a role of powerful and wily journalist. She performed her bit with perfection. It looks like she has done her own dubbing in this film. Her voice is different and more earthly than plastic Telugu voices our heroines get. She was very glamorous in this film and Tirupathy Awamy made sure that her 'glamour' is used to the maximum extent.

Shilpa Shetty: She looks different as the villege belle 'Kanaka Mahalaxmi'. In a few frames, her histrionics resemble that of manisha in 'Oke Okkadu'. Even her voice resembles us of 'Simran'. The artist who dubs for Simran has lent her voice to shilpa in this film.

Prakash Raj: He did a cameo role in this film. He is a sub inspector in this film. His role mostly involves in criticizing the society using slapstick comedy and ends up in attempting suicide as a proud Indian.

Raghuvaran: He acted as a Pakistan born muslim terrorist under the mask of a religious Hindu leader. Though he put all his efforts, there is no dhum in the character.

Technical departments:

Music: Background score of this film is gripping. But songs of the film are not upto the standard of Vyjayanti films. As far as shooting the songs are concerned, they are very impressive and rich. But the songs in second half have become ineffective, as the story of the film was dull during that part.

Dialogues: Dialogues in this film are good, though they are predictable. All the dialogues are trademark of Paruchuri brothers.

Screenplay: Screenplay by Yandamuri is good in the first half, but in the second half it's gone haywire. Yandamuri mark is shown in the stories too. In one of his novels, he made the PM of India as an agent of ISI. Like that he molded the villain character as an ISI agent in the mask of a Hindu.

Photography: Camera work is a definite plus point for the film. Chota K Naidu has excelled in making this film a visual treat.

Direction: Tirupati Swamy, a journalist by profession has chosen a story that is based on a journalist. The basic story of the film is inspired by a hindi film 'Main Azaad Hun' which in turn is inspired by a Hollywood 1941 classic 'Meet John Doe'. The story of the film good and director did an excellent job in the first half, but lost track in the second half. Though the way Soundarya established 'Azaad Character' as the savior of society looks unconvincing, the directed as played it in a good way.

Analysis: Analysis: The first half of the film is excellent. But it was the second half that let the film down. As we approach the climax, things become very routine and predictable. This film could have been done better. Director seems to have inspired by films like 'Oke Okkadu' (Shilpa Shetty characterization, keeping Arjun mom as Nag's mom), Bharateeyudu (creating terror that Bharateeyudu will come and destroy the evildoers), Mask of Zorro (where azad writes A with his sword after accomplishing act) and of course 'Main Azad Hoon'. On a whole, it was a good attempt to dish out a wholesome entertainer.

Review

Story

The film opens with the Khadgam title track that shows the greatness and history of India. There are a few Ariel moving shots of Charminar. Koti (Ravi Teja) is a hero wannabe. He has only one goal in life. That is to become a hero and to be called as 'Babu' by the industry people. Amjad (Prakash Raj) is an auto driver. Though extremely religious Muslim, Amjad is very patriotic about India. His younger brother Azhar is been missing since one year. The cops of Hyderabad arrested a dreadful ISI terrorist Masood. In a bid to get him released, the Pakistan authorities train Azhar (brother of Amjad) and send him across to Hyderabad to create riots and build communal tension. Azhar comes to Hyderabad and stays with his brother Amjad. Azhar's secret activities include devising and executing plans to release Masood.

Radha Krishna (Srikanth) is a sincere and efficient police officer. But he is very serious in nature and has enormous hatred towards Pakistan for the reasons best known to him.

The rest of the story includes how these three protagonists save the terrorist Masood from fleeing to Pakistan. And of course there is a 15 minutes flashback for Radha Krishna that involves his ladylove Swathy (Sonali Bendre) getting killed by the ISI guys.

Artists:

Srikanth: Srikanth played a full time serious role as an honest and powerful cop. There are good amount of stunts canned on him. He did a balanced action, as his character is a pretty serious one with less number of dialogues.

Prakash Raj: Prakash Raj has got more footage than any other character in this film. Though he sounded redundant at times, he did full justice to his role as a patriotic Muslim Indian.

Ravi Teja: This role of actor-wannabe is a tailor made one for Ravi Teja. He did extremely well in the scenes.

Raghu Babu: Raghu Babu (another son of actor Giri Babu) has been getting impact making roles now a days. In this film, he played the comic role of a typical PA (cum broker) in film industry. His getup and accent is extremely good.

Heroines: Sonali Bendre has a 15-minute role in this film and she is extremely sensuous in 'Nuvvu Nuvvu' song. Its sounds like she has dubbed her character in this film. She sounded decent. Sangeeta did a role of an innocent village belle who comes to Hyderabad in search of heroine chance in Telugu films. She realizes that it's not so easy and decides to sacrifice herself to a director in order to get heroine break (as per the suggestion of her mother). Kim Sharma played the role of cheerful girl. But there is no necessity for that role in this film.

Technical Departments

Story - Screenplay - direction: The basic storyline is about how three people from different walks of life and with different professions accidentally join in a mission to foil a terrorist activity. But Krishna Vamsi did lot of stuffing by inserting too many different threads. There are four heroes and four heroines. There is a love track for each couple. There is a comedy touch for the characters of Ravi Teja and Prakash Raj. In a bid to insert too many things in too little time, the director lost clarity. Screenplay of the film is loose. There is touch of Vamsi in few shots. But the grip on the pulse of audience is missing. His dig at the popular Telugu film heroes and 'Babu' culture in film industry is pretty good. The way he closed the character of Sangeeta is pretty realistic. But there is no relevance of Raviteja and Sangeeta characters to the main story line. Krishna Vamsi throws light on insecurity factor faced by Muslims in India and at the same time focused how some of Indian Muslims enjoy Pakistan winning over India in cricket matches. There is a verbal war between Prakash Raj and Srikanth over the greatness of Hinduism and Muslim religion in Indian context. But, people come to watch film for entertainment, but not for the heated verbal debates over burning issues. Krishna Vamsi also played anti-pakistani and anti-Muslim card like 'Gaddar' (Hindi film) to raise the emotions of the crowds. In order to put too many things in the film, Krishna Vamsi lost focus on straight narration and meandered over trivial issues.

Dialogues: Dialogues by Uttej are good in parts. The dialogues written for Ravi Teja that ridicules current hero system are hilarious. There is pretty good applause for two dialogues in the film that refers Pakistanis in unspeakable words (Pakistani *****kodukulu and Pakistani Madarchod).

Music: Songs by Devi Sri Prasad are good in the film. Picturization of 'Nuvvu Nuvvu' is very pleasant. All other songs also serve entertainment purpose. Rerecording of the film is good. Govinda Govinda song is hilarious.

Lyrics: Lyrics by Sirivennela are good. Especially the title track makes you sit and see what's happening on screen with reverence. Musugu Veyyoddu Manasu Meda song has typical Sirivennela kind of live-and-let-others-live philosophy. Nuvvu Nuvvu lyrics are very sensuous. Govinda Govinda lyrics by Shakti are good.

Photography: Photography for the film is decent. But I guess Bhoopati would have done a better job, if he were given more resources.

Analysis: First half of the film is decent. Second half is comparatively dull. When you watch a film and come out, you can say that you watched a film of a particular genre (like a love story, family cinema, youth film, comedy flick, mass masala etc). Though this film is made to represent the patriotic action film genre, Krishna Vamsi tried injecting all other five-genre elements. In that process, the patriotic aspect of the film did not get elevated. As a Telugu film, it's an average one. But for the standards of Krishna Vamsi it's a below average product.

Cast : Pawan Kalyan, Nikesha Patel, Manoj Bajpai, Charan Raj, Ali, Brahmaji, Nassar, Jyothi Krishna, Saranya, Girish Karnad, Shriya Saran and Others
Music Director : A.R. Rahaman
Cinematography : Vinod K Pradhan
Producer: Singanamala Ramesh
Director: S J Surya
Released Date: September 10, 2010
Story:
A tasteless tale, the story begins with the tough and honest cop Komaram Puli (pawan) who cannot stand injustice and with his heroics, he manages to get a phone booth in front of every police station where the common man can woe his complaints when ill treated by the police. One such complaint comes from a lady whose son goes missing, he is an inspector. That gets him to the door of the big don Salim (manoj). The regular verbal conflict happens and it turns out to be a battle of wits between both. However, Salim has got a strong connection with Puli for a wrong reason. What is that reason and what happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Presentation:
The director has come up with a nothing storyline and though the presentation was somewhat okay, the narrative was poor. The dialogues were okay, the script was weak and the screenplay was pathetic. Background score was good but songs were not upto the mark including their picturization. Editing was shoddy. Costumes were alright, art department was rich. Pawan Kalyan was okay in few places but most of the times, he was preaching which was boring, it looked unnatural. Nikesha Patel looks seductively hot and she has the right blend of beauty and talent. Manoj Bajpai was not used to his fullest, Charanraj was neat, Saranya was standard, Nasser was apt, Ali was stale, Shriya gives visual feast but her role was negligible. The others didn't have much to offer.

Conclusion:
Though the film came in with lot of expectations, it didn't have the right kind of ammunition to fire. The first twenty minutes is stale and poor in presentation. It is not before the interval that the real story picks up. The second half has some momentum but loses it due to a dragged sentimental scene and the climax was routine without any special appeal. Overall, the film has a weak content, poor narrative and improperly utilized technical values. This might draw a good opening due to the hype but it will fizzle at the box office in no time.

Bharatstudent Verdict: Disappointing and terrible!!!

Dabangg, dabangg dabangg, dabangg…..This we guess suffices the whole review. Frenzy, crazy, whirling, stimulating, wild and freaky - ‘Dabangg’ surely has a whole of it and much more. Chulbul Pandey (oh! we are sorry – it’s Robin Hood Pandey) surely has a control over his area and people. What’s more, he has a control over box office collections as well! An out-and-out entertainment, Salman Khan has given his fans one more chance to love him all the more dearly and this time it’s gonna be a fanatic fan following. Though playing the age old flute of good over evil, ‘Dabangg’ comes out as a clear winner and is all up sleeves to take the box office to an all new high. With masala films slowly fading away in the thin sky, the movie refreshes the mind and the soul and promises paisa wasool entertainment.

Co-written by writer-director Abhinav Kashyap, ‘Dabanng’ is housed in Uttar Pradesh. The movie centers on Chulbul Pandey, a totally fearless but corrupt police officer, who is nothing but an unstoppable force. Remember the lines of a popular Hindi song, naye packet mein beeche tumko chiz purani. Dabangg is everything of that and much more. The movie harps on age old Bollywood formula of a mother-son love relationship, coupled with half-brother and step-father hatred. Roll this up with loads of action sequence and garibo ka maseeha funda and you would end up having a usual Bollywood pandemonium at your disposal. Though this might sound ordinary, what’s extraordinary is the packaging. Dabangg is saucy, slick and polished.

They say, actors have a star value and power which they exude. They say it right! Salman in a never-seen-before act stomps his way out in the film and creates the magic and star power, which camouflages all the pitfalls. So, whether it is delivering the witty one-liners or trudging the opponents or even doing the Rajnikant tricks, you would be bound to love him. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Dabangg is dependent on three pillars, Salman's star power, superb stunts and foot-tapping music. Newcomer Sonakshi also needs to be applauded for delivering a neat performance. Despite the vast age difference, the two look good together. Arbaaz Khan is stony as usual. As for Vinod Khanna, guess he was asked to portray just two expressions, that of anger and helplessness.

Director Abhinav Kashyap gets a ‘hats off’ for delivering a vintage formula with grace, humor and subtlety. However, needless to say, just like a coin which has two sides, Dabangg also comes with its share of shortcomings. Though the movie comes with entertaining dialogues and good characterization, what rips off the drama is an engaging narrative. Dabangg fails to create a link, so much so that you can be sure to be bombarded with random plots and haphazardly placed scenes. Also, after a certain point of time, you get overwhelmed with the extra dose of fighting. Nevertheless, we still recommended the movie as it still manages to surface all the pitfalls and emerge out as a clear blockbuster!

Last Call: For Salman Khan fans and non Salman Khan fans, this is a must watch. While the former would cement their love for this actor, the latter are sure to find a reason to start loving him!

Dabangg Pre-release Review
After the triumphant success of action-packed ‘Wanted’, Bollywood hunk Salman Khan is back with yet another action-thriller titled ‘Dabangg’. With a fresh concept in hand, the movie also launches several new and fresh talent into the film industry, the most prominent being Arbaaz Khan (as a producer), Abhinav Kashyap (as a director) and Sonakshi Sinha (as an actor). While Arbaaz Khan has turned producer with this forthcoming flick, ‘Dabangg’ also marks as the debut film of Abhinav Kashyap, brother of much-acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, as director and Shatrughan Sinha’s daughter, Sonakshi as the female lead. The lyrics of the movie have been penned by Jalees Sherwani, Faiz Anwar and Lalit Pandit, while the music has been composed by duo Sajid-Wajid. ‘Dabangg’ is set to release on 10th September, 2010.

‘Dabangg’ is set in the city of Laalganj in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The movie revolves around a corrupted police officer, Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) who uses unorthodox working methods to fight his fears. Nevertheless, even the most fearless has to once fight back his inner fiends. Chulbul has had a terrible childhood with his father passing away too early. As if the loss was small, his mother Nalini (Dimple Kapadia) marries Prajapati Pandey (Vinod Khanna) and has another son, Makhanchan (Arbaaz Khan). As expected, Prajapati favors Makhanchan which annoys Chulbul. Hence, he decides to separate with the family, but still is attached with Nalini. However, after the death of his mother, he breaks all ties with stepfather and step-brother once and for all.

The entry of shy and charming Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha) takes Chulbul’s life to a new phase, all together. The negative and crooked Chulbul learns the positives of life and the true meaning of a family. But how can our desi film be complete without a villain? Thus, we have the dubious Cheddi Singh (Sonu Sood) who successfully creates disputes between the two brothers. Makhanchan follows Cheddi religiously only to realize that he had been used. To mend his mistake, he turns towards Chulbul, but Chulbul is reluctant. Now, will accept his brother’s helping hand? Will the two brothers be able to reunite?

‘Dabangg’ attempts to bring the involvement of police in the unlawful practices followed in UP and Bihar into the limelight. The movie has already created many waves in the industry with its promising promos. What’s more? Speculations about the success of ‘Dabangg’ are already doing the rounds, as the audience expects the movie to open at the box office with a 'bang'. Good news for all Salman Khan fans. Catch up your hot hunk in a complete new avatar donning negative shades. Let’s wait till 10th September, 2010 to see whether Salman Khan will once again be successful in creating oomph or not, just like ‘Wanted’.

Story of Thakita Thakita

The story of Thakita Thakita begins with a group of friends – Sridhar (Harshavardhan), Chandana (Haripriya), Nandini (Aditi), Mahesh (Trinetrudu), Bhakti (Bhakti), Jessica (Eva), Kishore, Scud.

Each of these guys and girls have their own stories and in between that is the unexpressed love track of Sri and Chandana, Bhakti and Mahesh, Nandini is in love with Kishore.

They all finish their college exams and are all set to take on the life with full energy but then life has its own twists and turns for them and this in turn gives them an experience which is unforgettable and memorable. What are those experiences? Who has a happy ending and who doesn’t forms the rest of the story.

Actors Performance:

Harshavardhan looks handsome and he has performed well in the dance front and emotional sequences. He has a glint of mischief in his eyes which will make him a youth icon if he chooses his roles well in the future.

Haripriya is the best among the lot. She scores the brownie points with her naturally beautiful looks, her graceful dance moves, her innocent expressions and versatility in different scenes.

Aditi was alright, Bhakti was energetic and looks dynamic, Trinetrudu was natural and does his bit well, the actor doing the role of Scud had a funny face and he makes his presence felt, the actor who did the role of Kishore was alright, Eva’s role was not etched well.

Bhumika is looking younger by the day, she is glowing as usual, Samrat was brief but good, Cochin Haneefa was apt, M S Narayana gave few smiles, both Nag and Anushka did their bit as required. Siva Prasad was good. The others didn’t have much scope.

Final Cut:

The film is basically an attempt to come up with a subtle comedy on life’s challenges. However, the director has failed miserably in conceiving it onto the screen though the idea is good. The major flaw lies in the screenplay and the sequencing of the scenes was quite disjointed due to which the audience finds it hard to connect and go with the flow.

The real highlights of the film are the songs, the production values, the music and Haripriya. On the flip side, the weak direction and poor handling of the script gives a blow to the outcome. Despite the presence of some high caliber technicians like Senthil, Marthand K Venkatesh and others, the director was unable to extract the best out of the film and this gives a stale effect for the audience.

First half of the movie is not gelling well while the second half is pleasing to some extent with some real content. The last few minutes are impressive. The film could have been better if the foundation was strong and now so the chances of scoring a success are in question. Credit must be given to producer for not compromising in any aspect of production.

Dialogues: Gandham Nagaraju
Editing: Praveen
Producer: Dharma Kartha
Direction: Praveen Sri
Cast: Jagapathi Babu, Kota, Vimala Raman, Tanikella, Kota Prasad, Harshavardhan, Ajay, Tarzan, Nagesh, Ravi Kale, Jeeva, Revathi etc
Release Date: 3rd Sep 2010

What is the Story of Gaayam 2?

Ram (Jagapathi Babu) leads a peaceful and happy life in Bangkok with a successful coffee shop business and a loving family in the form of his beautiful wife Vidya (Vimala), doting son and a brainless brother in law (Harshavardhan). His life takes a turn with the arrival of two people from Hyderabad- a lawyer (Tanikella) and Shankar Narayana (Kota Prasad), son of politician Guru Narayana (Kota Srinivasa Rao), an aspiring CM through the crooked way. The trio suspects that Ram is none other than Durga, their age old rival who gave them sleepless nights. Shankar Narayana and his lawyer try several ways to confirm the true identity of Ram. Whether their doubts are true or not and what happens after that forms the rest of the story.

Actors Performance:

Jagapathi Babu has done it before so he didn’t have to strain much, however, he still maintains that intensity in his eyes and the icy violence in his baritone voice.

Vimala Raman is a screen scorcher, though her role is domestic, she shows her wild side in one song which is enough visual feast. She is a tempting seductress blended with good acting skills.

Kota Srinivasa Rao is the show stealer. Despite so many years, his class as an actor and his typical Telangana style dialogues are excellent.

Tanikella was another impressive performer. His character has got length and he fits into it with perfect caliber and screen presence.

Kota Prasad’s performance was effective, he has carried out his role with ease and the right kind of emotions. It is sad that we have lost a fine actor…

Ajay was brief, Ravi Kale was regular, Jeeva was natural, Tarzan was funny, Harshavardhan was average, Nagesh was a new face who is to be watched out for, he has shown potential, the others were there to fill the screen and contributed in their own way.

Final Analysis:

Any film coming from the house of Ram Gopal Varma comes with certain expectations and usually, the results are extreme- a super hit or massive flop. But this time, the director has managed to bring it a saving grace and he was sharp in carrying the film without much hiccups. The dialogues were good, the background score was neat, songs could have been better as they had a retro effect, cinematography was appealing, editing was crisp, costumes and art department made their presence felt. Here are a few highlights of the film

The first half of the film is a straight lift from the Hollywood movie ‘A History Of Violence’. It is a literal scene to scene lift.

The makers had bravely shown the exact political situation in the state and one can relate Kota’s character to KCR in many ways. Incidentally, there is a lot of truth in the portrayal. The connection between the original and sequel was convincing which is a challenging part.

Scenes from the original ‘Gaayam’ drew whistles and claps from the audience, it was nice to see the raw clippings

On the flip side, since the plot was already known, there was not much variety tried and this brings down the interest. Also, those who have seen the Hollywood movie may not find the first half too appealing since the English flick was awesome. There was an inconsistency in few emotional scenes and the graph fluctuates. Overall, the film runs well due to its racy narration, good continuation and some fine performances. At the box office, this would be an above average grosser but if the makers can push it with aggressive publicity, the film will surely strike the success mark.

Story: Aisha Kapoor ( Sonam Kapoor) is the quintessential uptown girl from super rich South Delhi. She's smart, sassy and intelligent and spends her time with usual cosmo concerns: animal rights, art exhibitions, weekend getaways, polo matches, shopaholic sprees....But more than all this, her pet obsession seems to be matchmaking.

After having found a suitable match for her aunt, she now wants to pair off her newfound friend, downmarket, small town-ish Shefali Tiwari ( Amrita Puri), to Randhir Gambhir (Cyrus Sahukar), the man who actually is all eyes for Aisha alone. But before she can do that, she must transform the Haryanvi behenji into an uber chic style diva like herself. Indeed, a difficult project that gets even more tough because childhood buddy, Arjun Burman (Abhay Deol), seems hell-bent on scuttling all her `new projects' and censuring her `social work' as meddlesome mess. Does Arjun's opinion actually matter? Are marriages made in heaven? Can love be stage-managed? Good questions!

Movie Review: Take a back bench, Carrie Bradshaw and Co. Indian movielore has its own city slicker chicks who are definitely sweeter, sexier and more svelte than all of the Sex and the City girlie brigade put together. What's more important is the fact that their concerns are soooooo recognisable, ekdum familiar, and absolutely rib-tickling. So much so, they strike an instant chord with any and everybody -- chick and chico -- who has undergone the metropolitan mating game, complete with its distinct social divide between the two distinct types: the uptown dudes and dudettes and the downtown behenjis and bhaiyyas!

Producer Rhea Kapoor and director Rajshree Ojha's Aisha is a charmer for so many reasons. First and foremost, the film completely dazzles you with its style quotient. Truly, this must be one of the most exquisitely crafted films to sashay down Bollywood's boulevard in the non-action genre (we've had a lot of stylish action films, beginning with Satya). Every bit of costume, every incidental accessory and every tone of colour has been carefully co-ordinated to create a never-ending canvas that reminds you of a walk in a museum, brimming over with objects d 'arts. From Manish Arora, Anamika Khanna to Chanel and Ralph Lauren, Aisha and her friends just leave you gurgling with glee as they balance the bizarre with the beautiful. And yet, this fashion extravaganza never seems like a hollow catwalk. Kudos to stylist Pernia Qureshi and costume designer Kunal Rawal who create a whole new aesthetics for desi cinema. It's extremely difficult translating the aesthetics of an Austen novel on to the big screen, something which auteur director Ang Lee successfully managed in Sense and Sensibility. But when you try and translate Austen's early 19th century England into saddi Dilli and Manhattan-like Mumbai, it's got to be tricky. But hey, no hiccups for our stylists here. The transition is silken and smooth.

But the style quotient works only because the girls are such strong flesh and blood characters and carry it off so beautifully. Sonam Kapoor's super snob and spoilt brattish Aisha is actually quite adorable, even as Ira Dubey's best friend act as Pinky Bose stands out with its supercilious splendour. The duo are absolutely riveting as they breathe life into the archetypal `super bi**ches' who, if you scratch the glossy surface, are gooey and good-hearted go-getters too. They too have the same fears and the same dreams as the simpleton, Shefali who falls into their trap and becomes their latest victim and pastime. In a seminal scene, the three girls put their heads together, wonder and giggle whether they will have to die single. Sweet! Add to this the fourth diva, New-York returned, white-collared, corporate yuppie, Aarti ( Lisa Haydon) and you have a female foursome that literally carries the film on its fair and fragile shoulders.

But all this womanly business doesn't leave the men behind in any way. All the male characters have substance and soul, including Sonam's dahling of a dad (MK Raina) who first berates her on her exorbitant credit card bill and then later, shares a bowl of gajar ka halwa with her while dishing out some delicious homilies on love and life. Leading the men's brigade of course is Abhay Deol who creates Jane Austen's Mr Knightley to Sonam's Emma Woodhouse with an irresistible charm that is all his dimpled own. Completely in command, charmingly censorious and so much in love, he's the essence of Austen's heroes. But the rest of the boys -- Cyrus Sahukar, Arunoday Singh and Anand Tiwari -- aren't far behind.

Watch out also for Javed Akhtar's and Amit Trivedi's peppy music track which sends you out humming ` gal mitthi mitthi bol', as you savour your money's worth.

Sweet love, substantial performances, super fun, slick 'n stylish, Aisha is a-ha stuff.

A word about:
Performances: Everyone's immensely watchable. Sonam's great. Ira's awesome. Amrita Puri's simpleton act is heartwarming. Abhay is Abhay: ekdum in command. Arunoday makes an interesting debut. Cyrus is Cyrus: bright and bumbling.

Story: Jane Austen's nineteenth century England has been adapted very well to super swish south Dilli.

Dialogue: Reflects the concerns and cruel intentions of all cool twenty-somethings who wear their ahtitude on their sleeves and look down on lesser-turned-out mortals.

Cinematography: Both south Delhi and super rich Mumbai are captured with shadow and nuance by Diego Roderiguez.

Music: An excellent score by Amit Trivedi with peppy lyrics by Javed Akhtar and great vocals by Anoushka Manchanda, Neuman Pinto, Tochi, Amit Trivedi and the rest. Watch out for the title track, Aisha, By the Way and Gal Mitthi Mitthi Bol.

Choreography: Dare you to sit through Gal Mitthi Mitthi Bol!

Styling: Pernia Qureshi excels in creating one of Bollywood's most stylised films, even as the girls wow you with their Manish Arora Mickey Mouse tops, their Chanel pearls and their Lady Dior bags. It's a fashion rack that stretches from uber svelte to `GK-1 (Greater Kailash-1) tent house' with the Bahadurgarh behenji look thrown in-between.

Inspiration: The film is a desi adaptation of Jane Austen's 1815 novel, Emma.

We Are Family Movie Review

Starring: Kajol, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal
Directed by Siddharth Malhotra
Rating:

September 3, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Some films are good to look at. Some feel good at heart. Very few mainstream films manage to look as good on the surface and also attain a beauty of the heart. We Are Family is equally appealing from the outside and at heart.

It doesn’t take us long into the narration to realize that the debutant director has his own ideas on how urban man woman relationships work. Siddharth Malhotra brings the traditional compassion and large heartedness of Sooraj Barjatya’s films into the same line of vision as the urban fables about the man woman relationship of Gulzar’s Ijaazat and Govind Nihalani’s Drishti. The brew is invigorating and often very very moving in the way movies stopped moving us a long time ago.

The basic premise and even chunks of sequences and dialogues are taken from Chris Columbus’ Stepmom. Are Kajol and Kareena Kapoor as powerful in portraying the wife and the other woman as Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts in the original?

What if one says the two divas in the desi Stepmom are far more empathetic in their understanding of the complexities of a marriage that has not quite terminated and the alternative relationship which doesn’t know where to go without disrespecting the earlier relationship? Kajol and Kareena share a compelling partnership in portraying a household that’s run by two women?

The intricacies of the triangle are worked out with heartwarming delicacy, so much so that you wonder why the director needed to keep any of the elements from the Hollywood film. We Are Family takes the Stepmom saga to another level. It’s an urban fable told with subtlety and a softness of touch which completely avoid excesses of emotions until the last ostensibly gut wrenching finale when the narration gets excessively melodramatic.

The rest of the film is remarkably devoid of extravagant emotions even though the situation described and defined by the plot is susceptible to acute bouts of overt emotion. Having three actors who know how to play down the pitch without taking away the edge in the narration, surely helps the situation.

Kajol needs absolutely no recommendation. Her transformation from physically healthy but restless in soul, to a dying but spiritually healed entity happens right in front of our eyes. The little little things she does with her eyes and lips just rips a hole in our soul. Yup, she is one of our all time greats…without trying. Moments when she watches Shreya (Kareena) take charge of her children and husband find Kajol expressing a mixture of envy and resignation the way only she can.

But it is Kareena Kapoor who is an utter revelation. Never before has she demonstrated such a complete understanding of her character’s inner life. To the role of Kajol’s husband’s girlfriend Kareena brings a rare and reined in passion. Everything that she has done so far on screen is undone as Kareena redefines the role of the Other Woman in Hindi cinema.

Admirably the 6(!!) screenplay writers have worked overtime on Kareena’s part. She could easily have been the bitch who steals Kajol’s husband away. As written in the script Kareena comes across as flesh blood tears …and yes, as a woman of great beauty.

Arjun Rampal has been constantly evolving as an actor. Here he balances out the powerhouse performers on both his sides with a deeply felt emotional binding presence. And by the way he dances better than Kajol and Kareena in the disappointing ‘Jailhouse Rock’ number.

Sensibly Siddharth Malhotra has avoided the temptation of too many confrontational moments between Kajol and Kareena. We wouldn’t have wanted this tender sweet look at a shattered family’s attempts to hold the fabric of their togetherness in place to end up looking like one of those T. Rama Rao mera-pati-sirf-mera-hai kitsch-kitsch-hota-hai stale tales from the 1980s.

We Are Family takes the story of a broken marriage to an area of poignancy where the outer edges remain as strong as the inner fabric of the three characters who find themselves trapped in a tragedy not of their making. From the opening birthday sequence where Arjun introduces girlfriend Kareena to his wife and children , with disastrous consequences, the film exercises a high cool-and-calm quotient in its structuring.

At the end when Siddharth Malhotra has taken the family fable beyond Stepmom you suddenly realize it’s been a while since we saw a film about Man, Wife and Other Woman tackle the layers of painful separation and reconciliation with such fluency and care.

Go for this one.
